The road ended. Not metaphorically. The asphalt simply stopped, severed by a wall of mist that breathed like a sleeping lung. I stood at the precipice, the rear tires of my sedan spinning uselessly in the wet gravel. My hands trembled on the steering wheel. I had come here to find my husband. He had not been seen in three days. The police said he was likely in the river. I did not believe them....
