The ink on the parchment was still wet when I wrote the date, November the fourteenth, in the year of our Lord 1348, but the smell of the room was already that of old iron and dried blood. I am Thomas Bradshaw, formerly of the Royal Guard, now a scribe in the service of Lord Ashworth, and I write this not for posterity, but because if I do not record the fracture, I fear my hands will shake too...
