The Faded Ruin
The fire started at 4:00 AM. It ate the town hall first. Then the library. By the time I walked into the square, the air tasted like copper and burnt plastic. I was not supposed to be there. I was a clerk. I filed paper. I stamped forms. I did not investigate. But the files were missing. And I knew who had them. The smoke was thick. It curled into the gray sky like a ghost refusing to leave....
