The wren died in the snow. I found it at the base of the oak. Its wings were spread. It looked like a broken thing. I held it for a long time. My hands were cold. The feathers were gray. They were soft. I felt a pull. A deep, dark pull. I had been waiting for this. I knew it would happen. But I was not ready. I am a prisoner. Not of a cell. Of a house. A grand house. White stone.
