The kiln was hot. Too hot. I checked the thermometer. Needle in the red. I knew it should be there. I loved the heat. It made the clay sing. A low hum. Vibration in my teeth. I loved the weight of the pot in my hands. It was mine. My shape. My will made visible. I was the master of the fire. I thought. Then the letter came. No stamp. No return address. Just my name.
