The Faded Guest
The fire in the hearth ate the shadows whole. You sat at the end of the long oak table, the wood groaning under the weight of centuries and candles. Around you, the guests laughed, a sound like dry leaves skittering over stone. You did not join them. You held the goblet in your hands, the cold metal biting into your palms, and you watched the wine turn dark, almost black, in the dim light....
