The Wistful Silence
"Is the seal broken?" The question hung in the air, sharp as a flint strike. I did not answer. I kept my eyes on the leather. It was a thin strip, cured and smoked, stretched tight over a frame of ash. My hands moved with the precision of a surgeon, or perhaps a butcher. The rhythm was steady. Tap. Tap. Tap. The sound was dry, hollow. It echoed in the high vaulted ceiling of the workshop....
