The frost had not yet taken the root of the willow by the millpond, but you knew it was coming, for the air had that brittle, suspended quality that precedes the final cracking of the earth. You stood in the doorway of the cottage, holding the broom you had just used to sweep the last of the autumn leaves from the threshold, and you watched the steam rise from the chimney of the manor house...
