The Distant Ghost
The rain did not fall so much as it hammered, a relentless drumming against the slate roof of the inn that sounded like the nails being driven into my coffin. I was standing in the courtyard, mud slicking my boots to the cobblestones, watching the lanterns flicker and die one by one as the storm swallowed the town of Oakhaven. My breath came in short, ragged gasps, tasting of iron and old ash....
