I dreamt of roots. They were white, like bleached bone, twisting in the dark soil of a cellar I did not recognize. They pulsed. I woke with my hand deep in the dirt of my garden, fingers stained black, heart hammering a frantic, bird-like rhythm against my ribs. It was mid-morning in Oakhaven.
