The Pale Bonsai
You sit in the small, windowless room. The air is still. It smells of dust and old paper. A single desk lamp casts a cone of yellow light onto the blotter. Your hands are folded. Your nails are bitten to the quick. You are waiting. The clock on the wall ticks. It is a large clock. It has no numbers. Only hands. They move with a heavy, deliberate slowness. You count the seconds. One. Two. Three....
