The hall was cold. It smelled of dust and old wax. I stood before the throne. It was not a throne of gold. It was a chair of iron. High. Cold. Unyielding. The court watched. They sat in rows. Silent. Eyes like glass. They waited for me to speak. I did not speak. I looked at the floor. The tiles were cracked. A vein of stone ran through the dark marble. Like a wound. Like a scar.
