The rain hit the glass like gravel. It had been falling since Tuesday, or maybe Monday. Time had gone soft and sticky, like wet clay under a thumb. I sat in the kitchen. The table was bare. No flowers. No bread. Just the cold wood and the sound of the water beating against the pane. I am not human. I try to forget that. It is easier. I look in the mirror and see a face like a stone.
