The Distant Threshold
The glass shattered on the kitchen floor. Silence followed. A thick, wet silence that smelled of iron and cold dust. Thomas stared at the pieces. They glinted under the pale light of the electric bulb. He picked up the largest shard. It cut his thumb. He did not flinch. Blood welled up, bright and hot. He held the shard tight.
