The train cut through the mist, a long iron spine dragging us toward the capital. I sat by the window, watching the fields blur into a grey smear. Beside me, Thomas clutched his satchel. His knuckles were white. He did not look at the passing landscape. He looked at me. We were going to the Palace of State. We were going to be seen. The air in the carriage smelled of damp wool and coal smoke....
