The Pale Bonsai
The air in the basement tasted of copper and wet wool. It was a thick, suffocating scent that coated the back of my throat, a physical weight pressing against my lungs. I sat on the cold concrete floor, my knees drawn up to my chest. In front of me lay the tray. On the tray, the pills. They were small, white, and perfectly round. They looked like teeth that had fallen out of a mouth too small...
