The Faded Guest
The bottle had been on the kitchen table for three days. It was a thick, dark glass vessel, unmarked, filled with a liquid that looked less like medicine and more like suspended twilight. Margaret sat opposite it, her hands folded in her lap, the fabric of her apron worn thin at the elbows. The kitchen smelled of stale coffee and the faint, sweet rot of the apples left too long in the bowl....
