The Distant Wound
The rain fell like iron filings. It slicked the cobblestones of the street, turning the gaslight into a smear of sickly yellow. I stood in the doorway. My uniform was soaked. The wool clung to my ribs, heavy and cold. I watched the water run down the bricks. It carried the grime of the city with it. A thin black rivulet. It flowed toward the gutter. I did not move. My hands hung at my sides....
