The Distant Summer
The oak tree in the center of the room did not have roots. It stood there, a pale, silvery column of wood and leaf, suspended in the air as if it were a chandelier made of living things, its branches spreading wide to hold up the ceiling of the high, vaulted hall. Margaret sat on the cold stone floor, her knees pulled to her chest, watching the leaves rustle in a wind that came from nowhere....
