The Wistful Silence
The bell breaks. It does not ring. It shatters. A sound like a bone snapping inside a dry skull. You are there. You are always there. The great oak in the center of the square splits. The wood screams. The leaves turn black in a second. Not brown. Black. Like ash. Like rot. You hold your cup of tea. The ceramic is warm. The steam curls up. It smells of rosemary and old earth.
