The Golden Farce
The hand shook. It was a fine tremor, barely perceptible, like a leaf on a still pond. I held my left palm flat against the cold stone of the table. The court was silent. Above me, the ceiling vaulted high into shadow, painted with scenes of old kings and older sins. I was the Royal Scribe. A man of ink. A man of words. But today, the words were stuck in my throat, and all I had was this hand....
