The iron gate of St. Jude’s Asylum for the Insane stood closed. It was a heavy thing, wrought from blackened metal that had rusted into the shape of thorns. I stood before it, my hands bound by the cold air of November. The wind did not howl. It whispered. It whispered against my skin like a secret I had forgotten to keep. I was not here as a guest. I was here as a penitent. The year was 1892....
