The Distant Crown
The seal broke at dawn. I heard it before I saw it. A wet, tearing sound. Like meat pulled from bone. The air in the bunker thickened. It tasted of ozone and rot. I stood by the console. My hands shook. Not from cold. The climate control was failing. It was from the vibration. The hum in the floor. It was getting louder. "Stabilize the core," I said. My voice was a stranger’s. Dry.
