"Look at him," whispered the voice from the dark. "He is still there." Elara did not answer. She sat on the cold stone floor of the antechamber, her back against the heavy oak door. The air smelled of beeswax and old paper. It smelled of decay. "Is he dead?" the voice asked again. It was a young voice. Nervous. "No," Elara said. Her voice was low. A rasp. "He is listening."
