The fire did not warm you. It only watched. You sat on the cold stone floor of the ruin, your back against the damp wall, and you ate. The bread was hard. It tasted of ash and salt. You chewed slowly. You swallowed. The taste lingered. It was the same taste it had always been. Outside, the wind howled through the broken arches. It sounded like a voice trying to speak but forgetting the words....
