The Faded Alibi
The robin died on the sill. It sat there, rigid, its red breast a smear of rust against the gray wood. I did not move. I did not breathe. The air in the room was thick, heavy with the smell of wet wool and the metallic tang of blood that had dried into the fabric of my coat. Outside, the rain hammered the windowpane. A rhythmic, industrial drumming. The factory whistle had blown an hour ago....
