The Pale Letter
The carriage left the palace gates before the snow stopped falling. Margaret did not look back. She held the letter in her left hand, clutching it so tightly the edges bit into her palm. The paper was pale, almost white, like the bone of a bird. It had been sealed with black wax. She did not open it. She knew what it said. Or rather, she knew what they wanted it to say.
