The fog rolled in from the harbor. It was thick. It smelled of rust and brine. Margaret sat at her desk. The room was cold. The walls were bare. Only the clock ticked. It marked the seconds. It marked the minutes. It marked the end. She held the key. It was small. It was iron. It was cold against her palm. It did not fit any door in the city. It was a key to nothing.
