The train moved north. I held the coat. It was heavy. Wool. Dark blue. It smelled of rain and old paper. I had worn it for thirty years. Not a day without it. Not a single one. It was my skin. My shield. My proof that I existed. The carriage was empty. Only the dust motes danced in the slanted light. I looked at my hands. They shook. I was old.
