The Faded Alibi
The cellar smelled of wet earth and iron. I stood in the dark, holding a lantern. The flame trembled. My hand did not. I am a clockmaker. I know the weight of gears. I know the tension of springs. I do not know fear. Or at least, I did not, until the box arrived. It was small. Wooden. Bound in black leather. No name. Just my address in red ink. I carried it up the stairs.
