The blood is thick. It coats the back of my throat like cold iron. I taste rust and copper. The man on the ground is not moving. His eyes are open, fixed on a point in the middle distance that I cannot see. I stand over him. My hands are shaking. The weight of my uniform feels like a lead shroud. It is heavy. It is cold. It is wrong. We are in the Hall of State. The chandeliers are broken....
