The rain in London did not fall; it hung. It was a grey curtain, thick and cold, pressing against the windowpanes of the old bank on Fleet Street. Inside, the air smelled of wet wool and old paper. Arthur Penrose stood by the counter, his hands trembling slightly. He held the book. It was small, bound in leather that had once been red but was now the color of dried blood.
