The Distant Joke
The iron gate had not moved in forty years. I stood before it, my breath misting in the cold air of the valley. The stone wall rose high, slick with moss, holding back the forest and the silence beyond. Inside, the chapel sat empty, its roof sagging like a broken spine. I was a prisoner of the law, or so they said. My hands were free, but my soul was bound by the weight of the name I carried....
