The Pale Bonsai
The hall was too warm. It smelled of roasted meat and wet wool. We were crowded. I stood by the wall. My back hurt. I looked at the table. The candles flickered. They were tall. They were white. They burned low. The air was thick. It hung over us. I could not breathe well. I watched the guests. They ate. They talked. They laughed. Their voices were sharp. They cut the air. I did not join them....
