"You held the line." The voice was soft. It came from the dark corner of the barn where the hay bales had been stacked in neat, decaying rows. I did not turn around. I kept my eyes on the dust motes dancing in the single shaft of light that pierced the roof. "Did I?" I asked. My voice sounded hollow. It sounded like mine, but it was a stranger’s voice.
