The Faded River
The kettle sang. A thin, high wail. It cut the air. My hands shook. Not from cold. From the sugar. I put the spoon down. The metal rang against the clay. *Tink. Tink.* Small sounds. Big echoes in the room. The shop was closed. The sign on the door said *Closed*. The glass was fogged. Inside, the smell of caramel and burnt sugar. Thick. Sweet. Sickening. "Too much," I said to the empty air....
