The dream had a taste. It was iron and old pennies. Walter stood in the garden. The sky was the color of a bruised plum, swollen and dark. He held a bonsai tree in his hands. It was pale, almost white, like bone. The roots were tangled, thick as veins. He tried to prune it. His shears snapped. The metal bent. He looked at the handle. It was warm. It pulsed. He woke up.
