The Golden Visit
The bell tower cracked first. It was a sound like a bone snapping under a heavy boot. One moment, the air in the cathedral nave was still, thick with the scent of wet stone and stale incense. The next, a shard of limestone the size of a man’s skull plummeted from the ribbed vaulting. It struck the flagstones with a wet, final thud. Dust billowed. Silence rushed back in, heavier than before....
