The gate was low. Thomas ducked. Dust rose. Brown clouds. Thick. Cloying. He held his breath. The air tasted of iron. And old paper. He was small. Eleven. Thin. His hands shook. Not from cold. From fear. Or hope. The courtyard was vast. Paved in grey stone. Cracked. Weeds pushed through. Weak. Green veins. The building loomed. White. Blinding. Windows like eyes. Watching. Empty.
