The Distant Nightmare
The rain tapped against the glass. A steady, rhythmic drumming. I woke to the sound. Or perhaps I never slept. The dream lingered. A gray fog. Thick. Choking. I stood in a corridor. Endless. White. My father’s coat hung on a hook. Navy blue. Wool. Heavy. It smelled of cedar and old smoke. I reached for it. My hand passed through. Cold air. Nothing. I pulled back. The coat remained.
