The Golden Greenhouse
The orchids were dead. I woke with the smell of rot in my nose. Not the sweet, cloying scent of decay, but the sharp, acidic bite of wet soil and broken stems. I sat up. The room was dark. A single beam of gray light cut across the floorboards. I looked at the window. The glass was shattered. Not cracked. Shattered. A web of white lines, spidering out from the center. Outside, the wind howled....
