The wind off the moor was a living thing, sharp and gray, stripping the warmth from the skin. Elias stood at the edge of the cliff, his boots caked in the red clay of the valley below. He held the jar in his left hand. It was thick glass, heavy, and inside, a single wren lay curled in the damp straw.
