The clock in the tower has stopped at three. You know this because you have counted the ticks. Or rather, the silence where the ticks should be. It is a heavy silence. It sits on your chest like a wet wool blanket. You are in the scriptorium. The air smells of ink, dust, and old parchment. Your hands are stained black to the wrist. You are copying the Book of Hours. You are copying the Psalms....
