The bell tower was burning, and I knew it before I opened my eyes. The heat was a physical weight, pressing against my eyelids, smelling of wet wool and old dust. I was standing in the courtyard of St. Jude’s, the flagstones slick with rain that had never stopped falling. The sky was not blue, nor was it black.
