The Distant Nightmare
The snow had stopped, but the cold remained. It was a sharp, biting thing, lodged in the marrow. I sat in the kitchen, the room silent save for the ticking of the clock and the faint, rhythmic creak of the house settling into the frost. My hands were wrapped around a mug of tea that had gone cold long before I reached for it. The liquid was dark, still. I did not drink. I watched the surface....
