The air in the foundry tasted of iron and old rain. You are standing in the center of the floor, your hands blistered and white-knuckled, gripping the handle of a tongs that weigh as much as your guilt. The heat is a physical thing, a wall against which you press your body. Sweat runs into your eyes, stinging, blurring the world into a smear of orange and black. You are not supposed to be here....
