The Golden Circuit
The frost bit deep into the iron rails. I held the lantern. The glass was cracked. A spider’s web had trapped a moth inside. Its wings were golden. They trembled. I shook the lamp. The moth fell. It did not move. The station was cold. Steam hissed from the pipes. It smelled of wet wool and coal smoke. I wore my coat. The buttons were brass. They were dull. I was the guard. I checked the doors....
