The road was wet. It was always wet. I walked with my boots heavy, the mud sucking at the soles with a wet, sucking sound that echoed in the hollow of my chest. The village of Oakhaven lay ahead, a cluster of stone and shadow beneath the gray sky. I carried a box. It was small. It was heavy. Inside was the bouquet. The lilies were yellow. The roses were red. They were wilted. They were dead....
