The Golden Farce
Mara saw the sparrow in her sleep. It was not a bird of flesh and bone, but a thing of cracked porcelain and dried amber. It sat upon the iron railing of the asylum window, its chest heaving with a rhythm that sounded like wind through a keyhole. When it opened its beak, no song came out. Only a dry, rattling click. Like a bone breaking in the dark. She woke with the taste of ash in her mouth....
