The train cut through the mist like a blade through silk. I sat in the corner of the car, my fingers wrapped around a cold cup of tea that I did not drink. The institution waited at the end of the line. It was a place of glass and steel, built to preserve the fragile moments of a dying world. I was a scholar of time, or so the file said.
